Is sketching necessary for painting?

Sketching is not always necessary for painting, but it mainly depends on the artist’s preference. Some artists prefer to create a detailed sketch before painting to have a clear idea of the final execution of the piece.

Other artists prefer to do a rough sketch and add details through the colors they use. This approach can save time, as even detailed sketches will be covered by the paint layers.

There are also some artists who are excellent painters but may struggle with sketching. Because honestly sketching can be challenging, but it does not prevent someone from being a good artist. If you are skilled with colors, you can paint without even making a rough sketch.

As a kid, I struggled with sketching and believed that art wasn’t meant for me. However, as I grew older, I discovered my love for painting and other forms of art, but not sketching. The reason I disliked sketching was that I didn’t like rules. However, the first rule of art is that “there are no rules in art”. Once I realized this, I fell in love with painting and various forms of art.

Just Remember, there is always room for mistakes. And any mistakes can be corrected using the right techniques, no matter what color you’re using. Don’t let sketching be an obstacle to your artistic journey. And remember that art doesn’t have to be perfect, it’s the imperfection that makes it unique.
