Do you need a good camera to start photography?

When you’re starting photography you will wonder that do you need a good camera or a high-end camera to start photography. Questions like that will arrive in your mind. when you see a professional photographer with the most expensive gear and setup, it will make you wonder if that’s the secret behind their stunning pictures. And do you need to buy super expensive cameras to take pictures like them?

Well, the answer is no and also yes at the same time.  But mostly no, you don’t need a better camera to take a better picture. A good picture is dependent on framing, lighting, and composition. An expensive camera will do none of that. You as a photographer have to do that. So, an expensive camera is not necessarily needed to become a good photographer. A camera is just a tool, photography always depends on the photographer. You can use the most expensive camera in the market. Still, if you don’t know how to use it, it’s no good for you. So you don’t need all of that. Just a basic beginner-friendly camera will serve you well.

So now the question might arrive in your head, why do professional photographers always have the most expensive cameras? The main reason is the quality and the features the flexibility it gives to them. When you are a professional photographer you have to tackle a lot of different situations. You will not always get proper lighting or a good amount of time or environment whenever you are shooting something. So you have to rely on your camera at that moment and a good camera will serve you better. This is the main reason why professional photographers always go for the best cameras if they have the affordability. But again the camera and their equipment only give them comfort. However, the framing, lighting, composition, all of that is in the photographer’s hand. Their photos are good because their techniques are good not necessarily their gear.

But there will be certain situations where your techniques will not help, you will need a good-quality camera. Let’s look at an example, “it’s evening time and there is not much light, and your camera is not that good but you want to shoot a cinematic shot. But if you are not using a high-end camera, you might see a lot of grain in the picture. The outcome will not be good, and the overall experience will be bad as well. But if you have a high-end Sony or Canon camera you should not face this kind of problem as they have more aperture point and they have a bigger sensor.  And these will help them in this kind of situation.” So if I have to explain, yes you need a good camera for taking certain pictures at certain times. But overall a camera doesn’t decide how good a photographer is. A camera doesn’t make you a good photographer, your skills make you a good photographer. And always remember a camera is just a tool, it doesn’t define a photographer.
