What is the difference between Knitting & Crocheting? Which is easier?

Well, Crocheting & knitting both are really meticulous & interesting forms of craft. So there is no right answer which is easier but let’s try understanding the differences & similarities so that you can choose for yourself. But if you are thinking of starting, I suggest trying both for a while to see which one suits you best.

  • Tools:

The first difference there is the tools. For crocheting, we use a hook & for knitting we use two long needles. The crocheting hook is usually a metal stick with a bent end, which helps to grab the yarn & pass through other yarns. On the other hand, two straight wooden needles are used for knitting. One is used to store the loops and the other goes around the loops & makes the knots.

  • Yarns:
There is no difference in the types of yarn used in crocheting & knitting. Any kind of yarn can be used for both knitting & crocheting. But you might have to change your hook or needle sizes according to your yarn.
  • Projects:
Knitting is best for making Sweaters, scarves, shawls, hats, or anything that has to be stretchable & able to hold a shape. On the other hand, crocheting is mostly used for making stuffed toys, home decor, cardigans, blankets, coasters, or anything circular.
  • Fixing mistakes:
When it comes to fixing mistakes, knitting can be a little frustrating. Because you work with a whole row at a time, so if you want to fix a mistake, you have to undo the whole row. On the other hand, fixing mistakes in crocheting is quite easy. But if you notice the mistake after going way further, it can be a little complicated.
  • Cost:
A knitting kit can be slightly more expensive than a crocheting kit. But knitting takes up to 30% less yarn than crocheting. So, even if it’s a little more costly to start, over the time knitting will save you some yarn costs.
  • Time:
Knitting takes longer than crocheting due to smaller stitches. However, crocheting stitches are larger and can be built up quickly.
  • Patterns:
There are a lot more patterns in knitting than in crocheting. So it can take longer to learn all of them, whereas crocheting takes less time to learn. But even within the limited patterns, there can be endless project ideas in crocheting.

So, we can clearly see both have some pros & cons. And there is no correct answer to which one is better or easier. But personally, I think the most important thing is to have fun with what you’re doing. If you’re having fun, it doesn’t matter which is hard, expensive, or time-consuming.

My personal favorite is crocheting. Because I find the crocheting patterns more beautiful & modern, also we can create fun stuff like toys or home decor with crocheting. I love the fact that it only takes one tool & which is pretty simple to use.

But you can never know which one you might like better if you don’t try both. So I suggest, giving them both a shot & finding out for yourself which one suits you the best. Or maybe you can do both.
